First day of classes

Today was the beginning of a new school year for me - starting my 18th year at Kumamoto Health Science University. The students there are fun, talkative, people-oriented people. They are future nurses and physical therapists, so they are naturally friendly and helpful. It is always a pleasure to teach them.

Today was an introduction to similarities between English and Japanese, especially the idea of English 音読み, which comes from Latin, and 訓読み, which are native English words. For example, we say "cardiologist" for 心臓病専門医. "Cardio" means "heart" in Latin, and "-ologist" is "学者". If a student cannot remember the Latin 音読み of "cardiologist", they should try the English 訓読み, which is "heart doctor". It's easy!
